In George Herbert's book "Dune", Count Fenring and his wife communicate most significantly with coded "filled pauses".

I regret to say I have not yet read "Dune", although it appears to be one of the most highly recommended science fiction books of the last two decades. Since I live in Japan I don't have access to the book now (unless I pay the huge mark-up they have on foreign books, here).  This summer I'll be home in the U.S. for a couple months so I'll have to get myself a copy of it and catch up on what I've missed.
