Interesting stuff.  A pop-culture reference that you may not have seen (since you're in Japan): On a cartoon for adults called "South Park," there's a school counselor character who has gained a cult status, at least among my twisted friends. The major source of humor for this character is the peppering of his speech with "mmmkay."  I now know to call this a filled pause!
