Having attended an elementary school in the 1950's with a "Major Work" program which emphasized good speech, I am appalled at the way U.S. athletes talk in television interviews. Usually about once every five seconds, they insert an "um", a "ya' know", or an unnecessary "and", or they repeat a word. These people are supposed to be national heroes!

I regret that I was never able to take a good speech course. My speech is still littered with filled pauses. But, I'm working on it. I understand how you feel about many athletes. Actually, though, I do not really expect them to be fluent speakers. They are accomplished athletes, not public speakers.
