I have attempted to rid my sixth graders of the habit of saying "um", which precedes the answer to every question I ask. Instead of me helping them, I have the habit. I finally have something to call it - an FP. Maybe, with a name, we can better communicate about it. Thanks.

I have a new discovery! FPs are contagious!
Have you ever heard of Toastmasters International? They are an organization whose members are committed to improving their public speakings skills. One member who visited FPRC said at their meetings they have somebody who rings a small bell everytime somebody uses a FP. Perhaps this is something that sixth-graders would both enjoy and learn from. You might designate a no-FP hour of the day, give the bell to different students each day, and then begin a class discussion. Of course, you'll have to make sure that you don't cause the bell to ring more than they do!
