I work in sales and often find myself using filled pauses because I'm formulating my next words but don't want to lose control of the conversation. Frankly, I don't like that and I try to reduce this bad habit.
I've noticed, though, that some use filled pauses for a less acceptable (in my view) reason and that is to simply dominate the conversation. Again, for that reason, I've tried to be a little introspective and reduce my use of this technique. I believe that the art of polite conversation requires a person to be interruptible.
