I am a RN-BSN.  I believe that filled pauses may be the result of an apparently harmless occurence in the brain.  Most likely a tiny interruption of electrical activity whic results in a short, temporary "gap" or pause in speech or thought.   Another possibility may be the result of a person's "mouth going faster than the brain".  The filled pauses may well be nature's way of forcing the person to slow the speech to allow the brain to catch up.  One might compare this to the computer.  When my kids get in a rush and start clicking away on the mouse, eventually the box will come up saying "The computer has performed an illegal operation....".  Best of luck on your research!!!
